Learning Quran Online: A Beginner’s Guide for Adults

An adult beginner learning the Quran online with a teacher

Maybe you never had the chance to learn the Quran properly as a child. Maybe you can read a little but know your recitation has mistakes. Or maybe you are starting from the very first letter. Whatever your age and wherever you live, it is not too late. This beginner’s guide explains how adults learn the Quran online with Quranic Values: where you start, what worries most beginners and how we solve it, how long the first steps take, and the one piece of advice that makes the biggest difference.

﴿وَلَقَدْ يَسَّرْنَا الْقُرْآنَ لِلذِّكْرِ فَهَلْ مِن مُّدَّكِرٍ﴾“And We have certainly made the Quran easy to remember, so is there anyone who will be mindful?”Surah Al-Qamar (54), verse 17

Why Learn the Quran Online as a Beginner?

  • One-to-one with a qualified teacher: the teacher hears every letter you recite and corrects it immediately. Recitation is received from a teacher (talaqqī), not from books or apps alone.
  • No embarrassment: you learn privately, at your own pace, with no group watching.
  • Fits your life: short classes of up to about 25 minutes, Sunday to Thursday, with times available around the clock and changeable whenever your schedule changes.
  • Teachers from Madinah who taught in the Quran circles of Al-Masjid an-Nabawi.

Where Will You Start? It Depends on Your Level

There is no fixed age for any stage. We decide the starting point after meeting you and a short level assessment in the free trial:

Your level Where you start
Cannot read Arabic yet, or have clear mistakes in pronouncing letters and vowels The Noorani Qaida: letters, articulation points, vowels and words, until you read a full verse alone
Read the Quran, but with mistakes A recitation correction course, combining practical reading with theoretical Tajweed
Read correctly and want to go further Memorisation (Hifz) or Tajweed

We have started the Noorani Qaida with students in their thirties and with elderly students. Starting from the beginning is nothing to be shy about. It is the fastest way to read correctly.

How Long Until You Can Read on Your Own?

For most adults, completing the Noorani Qaida takes about one month. Some finish sooner and some need longer, depending on each person’s situation, practice and consistency. After that you begin reading from the Mushaf with your teacher.

The Biggest Worry: “Will I Forget What I Memorise?”

The most common concern among adult learners is that their memorisation will slip away. The answer is in how you memorise. We use a method that engages three senses together:

  1. Hearing

Listen carefully to the verse recited correctly by your teacher.

  2. Sight

Look at the words in the Mushaf as you hear and read them, so your eyes remember their place on the page.

  3. Tongue

Recite aloud, repeating until it flows correctly.

When ear, eye and tongue work together, memorisation becomes much firmer. Add daily revision to a fixed plan, and what you memorise stays with you.

A Real Example: An Older Student Who Transformed His Recitation

One of our current students, an older man, joined to correct his recitation. His tongue found it hard to move between consecutive vowels (fatḥah, kasrah, ḍammah), so he often read words incorrectly.

  • We suggested he move temporarily to the Noorani Qaida. Working together, he completed it in two weeks.
  • He then returned to the Quran from where he had stopped, and improvement began.
  • We added reading at the pace of taḥqīq, the slowest, most careful level of recitation, which gives every letter and vowel its full right. His improvement grew further.
  • Within two months, his mistakes decreased noticeably. At the start, he only noticed a mistake when the teacher pointed to it. Now, he recognises his own mistake as he reads and corrects it immediately.

That is the real goal: not only fewer mistakes, but a reader who can hear and fix their own recitation.

Our First Advice to Every Beginner

Advice differs by level, age, background and commitments, but two principles apply to everyone:

  • A little that lasts is better than a lot that stops. This well-known saying reflects the hadith: “The most beloved deeds to Allah are those done consistently, even if they are small” (reported by al-Bukhārī 6465 and Muslim 783; Dorar).
  • Better late than never. Start today, even with a little: two new lines of memorisation a day, or half a page of reading to correct your recitation, plus a light Tajweed lesson. After three months you will be surprised how much these small daily lessons have added up to.

Questions Beginners Ask

I am over 40 (or 60). Is it too late?

No. We teach adults of all ages, including elderly students who started with the Noorani Qaida.

I can read a little. Do I need to start from zero?

Only if the assessment shows it would help. Sometimes a short return to the Qaida, even two weeks, fixes problems that would otherwise take months.

How much time do I need each day?

One short class of up to about 25 minutes, plus a little practice. Consistency matters more than the amount.
